What's this alpha about?

This alpha test is primary aimed at extension developers, rather than normal users. This is primarily because SDK has been changed in significant ways and is now more important than ever, even to core built-in features (many of which are now implement as plugins). I would like to get feedback soon while the app is not fully done yet, in case we come to conclusion that major changes need to be done to the SDK. Saying that, feedback for general changes to the app from user's point of view are definitely also welcome.

This alpha is also not feature complete Playnite 11, see roadmap section for more info.

What's in the alpha?

Core functionality of Desktop mode for library management and plugin development. It's currently provided as portable install only and comes with 3 "built-in" plugins: IGDB metadata, GOG and Steam integrations. Steam integration currently doesn't allow linking of accounts, only imports installed games.

Can I import P10 data?

You can't. Data import from P10 will be available in beta 1.

Also P11 will be completely separate app, it won't support in place update over P10. You can run both P10 and P11 at the same time.

Can I use existing plugin or theme?

You can't. P11 will not support any existing P10 plugins or themes. The app was changed completely under the hood and providing any compatibility with existing addons is not possible.

Will other phases take this long to arrive?

Hopefully not. I have certain features from other phases in various states of development already. The biggest unknown right now is Fullscreen mode, which is in early stages of development. I would definitely want to have P11 done completely this year, now that foundations are "finished".

Why is it so ugly?

It's an alpha, theming support is not done in this version and this is not how the final version will look.

I don't like how something works now, what do I do?

Please send feedback via appropriate channels. Right now in alpha, anything is subject to change if there's good reason for it.

I found a bug, what do I do?

Please report it via appropriate channels.

Does this support Linux?

It doesn't, and final Playnite 11 won't support Linux. You can get more information about Linux plans here.

What took so long?

I'll probably write retrospective when this is all done. But long story short, this is basically complete rewrite from ground up, and I re-started development multiple times. For various reasons, some bad decisions on my part, some life got into way reasons.

Where's source code?

Source code will be made public later, most likely with beta 2 release.

Where to send feedback and report bugs?

Two options:

  • Submit an issue at Codeberg. Playnite is moving from GitHub to Codeberg with P11, so I would like to start tracking P11 related things there already.
  • On Discord in #feedback-playnite11 channel.

Please do not send feedback on Reddit. It's terrible for keeping track of things and I generally hate interacting with it for support stuff.

Where do I download this?

Here, there's currently no auto-update, so you will need to download new versions manually as they arrive.

Will final version arrive before Half-Life 3?
